February is Wellbeing Month at BFA

For many, the colder seasons mean crisp mornings, warm drinks and snuggling by the fire. But for others, the shorter days signal a downturn in mood and energy leaving us feeling sad and sluggish. Just before we go into Spring can be a hard time for people, having gone through the winter months. Always seek medical advice from a doctor if you are experiencing a severe down turn in mood.

Tips to boost your Wellbeing

Get Outside

Physical exercise is perhaps the single most important thing you can do to keep your brain healthy. To maintain an even mood and a sense of mind-body balance, the easiest and most accessible thing to do is get outside. Why not join our new East Riding Walking Group?

Talk and spend time with others

Connecting with people is a wonderful way to boost your bliss hormones. To improve your mental and emotional fitness, focus your energy on people who are positive and engage in healthy habits. Come along to our Keep Warm Café & Groups for a Cuppa and a Natter or be entertained at our Monthly Social.

Breathe

Whenever you feel angry, moody or stressed, take a deep breath, hold it for one or two seconds, then slowly exhale for about five seconds. Do this about 10 times and you will start to feel more relaxed. One of the best times to practice this is when walking outdoors, in the fresh air, or alternatively try our Yoga & Pilates Group.

Sleep

Lack of sleep often leads to illness, which makes it that much harder to accomplish everything on your to-do list. To ensure that you have the energy you need to aim to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night and top up in the day if you’ve had a bad night.

Get Creative

Creative activities, such as crafts, painting and photography, can be therapeutic as they can help you switch off from day-to-day pressures, turn negative thoughts or feelings into something positive. At our Keep Warm Café & Groups there is a Fabrics, Textile & Craft Group that you can join in with or take part in our monthly craft project.

Eat Well

Reducing processed foods like white rice and pasta, foods containing refined sugars, alcohol and caffeine may all help. Protein and fibre also have a positive effect on balancing blood sugar levels. Try to eat lots of varied fruits and vegetables and healthy fats like those in oily fish. BFA’s Diabetes Support Group facilitator is always available to share healthy recipes and tips at meetings, not just for diabetics.
